Historical Highlights
Tsinandali Estate
Tsinandali Estate is the cradle of classical Georgian winemaking and the place where Georgian wine was first bottled. Historic vintages such as Saperavi 1841 are preserved in the Princely Oenotheque, a collection dating back to 1814 that includes legendary labels like Château Lafite and Château d’Yquem. Founded by Prince Alexander Chavchavadze, the estate blended Georgia’s 8,000-year-old traditions with modern European techniques. Today, you can wander the botanical gardens and see where ancient kvevri and classical European methods still coexist.
Shuamta Monasteries (Old & New)
Hidden in the dense deciduous forests of Kakheti, the Shuamta complex consists of two distinct sites. Old Shuamta features three basilicas dating as far back as the 5th century, representing the dawn of Georgian Christianity. Nearby, New Shuamta was built in the 16th century by Queen Tinatin. Legend says the monastery was built on the spot where she had a dream of her future husband, King Levan. The site is a serene sanctuary reflecting centuries of royal patronage and spiritual peace.
Telavi & The Giant Plane Tree
The historic heart of Kakheti, Telavi is framed by the majestic Caucasus Mountains. As the former capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti, the city is deeply connected to King Erekle II. Standing at its center is the 900-Year-Old Giant Plane tree (Platanus orientalis). At 40 meters tall and 12 meters wide, this living witness to history has survived centuries of battles and political shifts. It remains the ultimate symbol of the city’s endurance and a favorite spot for visitors to capture a piece of history.
Gombori Pass
The drive through the Gombori Pass is one of the most scenic experiences in eastern Georgia. Reaching altitudes of over 1,600 meters, the road winds through lush forests and opens up to breathtaking panoramic views of the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus range. It is particularly stunning in spring when the greenery is vibrant and in autumn when the forest turns into a sea of gold and red.
